SUGGESTION DE CORRIGE BAC 2010 - LV2 SERIE S

Publié par Sandrine CHARAVY

I. COMPREHENSION

The ‘remarkable trip’ (l.2)

                       1.  Say what itinerary was followed.

a. Where from?

The itinerary was followed from Lwow

b. Where to?

To Rotterdam

c. What for?

To take a boat to America

d. What means of transport?

by train

To pour répondre à la question « what for » pour indiquer le but

By pour indiquer le moyen de transport

                          2. a.  How many characters made that ‘remarkable trip’?

Two characters made that ‘remarkable trip’ (the narrator’s father and Sylvia)

              b. How were they related to each other?

                                                             They were brother and sister

3.                       3. a. Why was the girls’ ‘long hair’ (l.15) a problem? (40 words)

Before being allowed to get on the boat the passengers had to undergo / go through an examination / an inspection for lice. As she had very long hair, it took a longer time for her to be examined. The longer her hair was, the more it took time before being allowed to go on board.

                            b. How was it solved?

The grandfather pretended there was a fire and took advantage of the panic / confusion to get on the boat.

                                     4. How is the narrator related to the main characters?

The main characters are his grandfather (his mother’s father) and his great aunt.

                                     5.  When did the narrator heart the story for the first time? Include a quote in your answer.

The narrator heard this story for the first time when he was young but ‘it was so long ago that [he] can’t remember when it might have been’ (l.18)

                                      6. Why the phrase (II.16, 17, 22) is ‘Because the girls had such long hair’ repeated several times (30-40 words).

This phrase is repeated three times for several reasons. First, it arouses the young boy’s curiosity. He does not understand why having long hair can prevent somebody from getting on a board. Moreover, this ‘long hair’ could have changed their destiny and ruined their chance to go to America. This hair is a very crucial detail in the grandfather’s story.

                            7. a. Explain in your own words how the narrator responded to the story the first time it was told (20 words)

As he was young the first time he heard that story, the narrator was confused and could not understand why a person with long hair could be prevented from getting on a board.

                                    b. How did the narrator respond later and why? Include a quote in your answer.

Since he was older, the narrator understood that his grandfather was a ‘sophisticated storyteller’. This detail appealed to the narrator’s imagination and it aimed at making him ‘ask questions so that he could launch into his story’ (l19.21).

EXPRESSION: choisir l’un des deux sujets !!!! (200 mots)

Sujet 1 :

The narrator wonders ‘if this story is not a lie’ (l.38) and asks Sylvia about her version. It turns out to be completely different. Imagine their conversation.

Sujet 2:

What kind of stories appeal to your imagination? Say why.
