After a long and stressful match versus Lille (it ended with penalties), the AS St Etienne finally managed to win and to reach the last step of the League Cup that is to take place in April in Paris, Stade de France.

This is a wonderful event for many "stéphanois" and inhabitants from all around the "green" city.

1. Short history of the AS Football team.

The club was created in 1919 and it plays its home matches at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard in St Etienne.

The current manager of the team is Christopghe Galtier and the captain is Loic Perrin.

Saint Etienne is the most successful footbal club in France as it won 10 Ligue One titles and 5 Trophés des Champions. The club was particularly successful in the 1970's when it was managed by Jean Snella, Robert Herbin and Albert Batteux.

In 1976, St Etienne reached the final of the European cup and played in Scotland against the famous German team, the Bayern of Munich. Unfortunately, and because of the "square posts", the "Verts" were unable to score on numerous chances. The German team won the European Cup... Fortunately, the ASSE won the Frecn Cup the following year.

Many notable players used to belong to St Etienne Football Club such as Laurent Blanc, Robert Herbin, Aimé Jacquet, Jérémie Jeanot, Loic Perrin, Michel Platini, les frères Revelli, Dominique Rocheteau.

2. Geoffroy Guichard: the place to be!

The "cauldron"

The stadium is used mainly for football matches and tournaments such as the 1984 European Football Champioship, the Football World Cup in 1998 or the Confederations Cup in 2003. It ws also used to welcome the 2007 Rugby World Cup

The stadium opened on September 13th 1931 and the first match of the ASSE took place on September 17th. It is named after Geoggroy Guichard, who was the founder of Group Casino and who bought the place where the stadium was to be built.

The stadium can welcome 35,616 people and there are four different stands, namely Charlees Paret - Jean Snella - Pierre Faurand and Henry Point.

New renovations are being made in the stadium and its capacity will increase to 41,000 seats.

Attending a match in GC is an incredible experience as the atmosphere is always welcoming and over-excited. The stadium's nickname is the cauldron, meaning that inside, the atmosphere is explosive. Each time you can listen to the famous song, "Allez les Verts"
